General hospital amenities

There is a restaurant, chaplaincy, coffee shop, snack bar and shops.

Crownhill, which is about a mile down the main road, has a small range of shops, including a bank and Post Office. There are also branches of Tesco and Asda within a mile radius (maps are kept in information folders in cubicles). There are branches of fast food restaurants five minutes walk away.

Travel details to hospital

Train: Plymouth station is located approximately 7 miles from the hospital. The station is very near the city centre and the best bus to take to the hospital from the station is the Number 7. This service runs approximately every 20 minutes.

Bus: Derriford Hospital has the second largest bus terminal in Plymouth, with over 44 buses an hour at peak periods. The fastest route to the hospital is the Number 7 service from the Royal Parade in the city centre. This leaves around every 20 minutes.  To obtain the latest times and routes ring:  0870 608 2 608.

Parking on Site:  Although Derriford has Devon's largest car park, parking is limited and the car parks are usually very busy.

Patient Parking:  For patients attending chemotherapy, radiotherapy and oncology, the charge is £1.20 all day. 

If you are collecting a patient, you may park for a maximum of 20 minutes without charge.

General: Wild Goose Ward

No. of Beds: There are 5 cubicles available for oncology patients.

Age Range: All ages.

Ward facilities

Play: There are specialist play workers on the ward to play with the children. They can take toys into the cubicles and also participate in activities with the children.

Learning: For those children who are well enough, there is a hospital school room where the children can complete school work set by their local school.  Staff are on hand in the room to support the learning.  

Other facilities: Internet access is possible in the cubicles.

Ward routine

Meal Times: These are at fixed times. 

Rounds: Doctors perform rounds every day, as does the oncology specialist.  There are no set times for the rounds. 

Visiting: Open access visiting is in place.

Accommodation for families

In each cubicle there is a bed available for a parent. There are 2-3 parent rooms offered on the children’s unit. Facilities include TV, bed washing and tea/coffee making facilities. Parents whose children are not in cubicles have priority. There is a Travel Lodge just opposite the hospital.

Additional information

Domiciliary Care: Facilitated by CLIC Sargent nurses and a CLIC Sargent care professional.

Palliative Care: Offered by the multi-disciplinary team plus the primary health care team. 

Play Therapist: A play therapist is available at the clinic and can help with preparation for scans, procedures, etc. 

Psychology: A psychologist attends the clinic and routinely meets all families.  She is also involved with care Team in running groups. 

Support Groups: The parent user group runs a support group for parents and arrange occasional social functions. The care professional periodically arranges meetings for parents, bereaved parents and workshops for siblings /patients and a residential weekend for children. Children are given the opportunity to go to camps as and when they are available. There is a folder of parents’ names to contact in each room for advice if parents should wish.
