General hospital amenities
The Great North Children’s Hospital at the RVI is located very close to Newcastle city centre, making banks, Post Offices, cinemas, supermarkets and high street shops very easily accessible. There are many take-away restaurants locally which can deliver to the hospital. Leazes Park is located five minutes from the hospital; there is a boating lake and play area.

The easiest way to the town centre from the ward is to go out of reception on the ground floor and turn right, continue until you take a left turn onto St. Thomas Street. At the bottom of St. Thomas Street, turn right and go over the pedestrian crossing which will take you to Marks and Spencer and the back entrance to Eldon Square.
Hospital amenities include: restaurants, a coffee shop, Pharmacy and a mini supermarket. These are all situated in the New Victoria Wing on level one and two. There are cash machines in the hospital situated in the Lezaes Wing, opposite the hairdresser’s and in Amigo mini supermarket in the reception/foyer area of the New Victoria Wing.

Train: The closest mainline station is Central station. Metro is available for travel from Haymarket and is the nearest Metro station to the hospital.
Bus: Buses run by Stagecoach leave from Newgate Street in the centre of the city. This is a five minute walk from Central station.
Parking on site: On site car parking is available and readily accessible.

General: Ward 4 – Paediatric Oncology & Teenage Cancer Unit (TCU).
No. of Beds: There are 20 beds on the ward. The ward is made up of cubicles, beds and the teenage cancer unit.
Age Range: 0-18

Play: There is a play therapist on the ward to assist the children in play and activities. A play area on the ward is very well equipped with toys and books. In the TCU the children and young people have access to the internet, computers, and a pool table. A kitchen and lounge is available in the TCU which also has TV and video.
Learning: Hospital teachers go onto Ward 4, and the Day Unit.
Other Facilities: The day unit, attached to the ward is equipped with toys, TV and a video player. There are facilities for washing and drying clothes during inpatient stays.

Meal Times: The meals are at set times and are delivered by trolley. However there is a kitchen on the ward and food can also be purchased at the restaurant and hospital shops. There is a trolley service that operates daily to the children’s ward offering confectionery, newspapers etc.
Rounds: These are regular and are carried out once every morning and afternoon.
Visiting Times: Open visiting is in place, although within reason.

One parent is able to sleep next the child’s bed. However there is additional accommodation at Crawford House, run by the Sick Children’s Trust. This is accessed via ward staff on admission. It should be noted that this is for parents of children under the age of 16.
