General hospital amenities

The main restaurant is open 7am-8pm and serves hot meals, salads and snacks. There are also two coffee shops selling light refreshments.

The hospital has two newsagents selling basic items. A cash machine is located in one of the newsagents. There is also a flower and fruit shop, and a shop selling ladies' clothing.

There is a small parade of shops about five-minute's walk from the hospital. This includes a Post Office, a bank, chemist, small supermarket and greengrocers. There is also a petrol station.

Travel information

Train: Ipswich station is 3.5 miles from the hospital. Contact National Express East Anglia on 0845 600 7245 for train information.

Bus: There are bus stops within the hospital grounds outside the Garrett-Anderson Centre, which is very close to the Department of Child Health. A regular daytime bus service operates from the town centre. The following buses stop at the hospital: 75, 75A, 76 and 77 leave from the Old Cattle Market; 5, 11 and 31 leave from Tower Ramparts.  

The Super Route 66 leaves from the railway station and stops very near to the hospital. Contact Ipswich Buses on 0800 919390.  
 
Parking on site: There is limited patient and visitor car parking at the hospital. It is pay-and-display and hourly/daily rates apply. For visitors to long-term patients in child health, a ticket valid for three days is available - ask a member of ward staff.

General: Paediatric Ward – Bergholt & Boxford (Day Unit)

No. of beds: There are 25 beds. Generally oncology patients will be in a cubicle. 

Age range: 0-16, however this is flexible.

Ward facilities

Play: There is a playroom on the Bergholt Ward, with a dedicated play team to assist in activities. This is a very well-equipped area. An outside play area also exists. For teenagers there is a conservatory where they can relax away from the ward.

Learning: There is a full-time teacher and a full-time teaching assistant. They are able to liaise with the patients' schools to organise appropriate work.  top of page

Ward routine

Meal times: Breakfast is 7.30am-8.30am, lunch 12pm-1pm and tea 4.30pm-5.30pm. 

Rounds: The ward rounds are from 9.30am.

Visiting: Completely open visiting is in place.

Accommodation for families

One parent is usually accommodated on a sofa-bed in their child’s room. Some parent accommodation is available within the hospital, in the form of a flat. This is accessed via the ward manager, or contact South Reception on 01473 702063 for details.
