This is part of the specialist children’s cancer and leukaemia treatment centres. Children with brain tumours are treated here and bone marrow transplantation is undertaken here.

General hospital amenities

The Western Court restaurant, Conservatory coffee shop and snack shop are all available in the hospital. For parents who are resident on the ward, the Conservatory coffee shop is able to provide meals at staff rate upon receipt of a voucher (available from the ward clerk).

The hospital is located on a busy street with banks, a Post Office and supermarkets in the vicinity. The cinema and high street are a bus ride away. There is a park located behind the hospital.

Travel details to hospital

Train: The closest mainline station is Central station; Metro is available for travel from Central station. The closest Metro station is Haymarket which is approximately a 5-10 minute walk.

Bus: Buses to the hospital leave from Central station and are run by Stagecoach. For further information contact Traveline on 0870 608 2608.

Parking: On site car parking is available, however charges apply and it can be very busy. Free parking is available for disabled patients and visitors near each entrance. If these are full, speak to a member of the security staff who can offer you assistance.

Parking charges are as follows:
· 1 to 5 hrs - £1.10 per hour
· 6 to 10 hrs - £7.70 for whole period
· 11 to 24 hrs - £13.20 for whole period
· Weekend Rates are discounted by 50%

Ward details

General: Ward 24 – General Paediatric. Mix of general paediatric, neuro-oncology and neuro-surgical. Ward 23 - Bone Marrow Transplantation unit.

No. of Beds: Ward 24 - 15 bedded ward, (10 beds and 5 cubicles). Ward 23 – 8 cubicles.

Age Range: Ward 24 - 0 to 19yrs. Ward 23 - 0 to 21yrs.

Additional Info: There is a bay designated specifically for adolescents.

Ward facilities

Play: There is a play area for children. In addition to this there are two nursery nurses available (please check with the ward staff for the nursery nurses’ exact hours of availability). Facilities include a good stock of toys, games, computers, arts & craft, DVDs and Playstations.

Learning: There are three hospital teachers available for the whole unit. Teaching is available during term time and teachers are also able to arrange for home tuition to take place.

Other Facilities: Catering facilities in the hospital can be a problem. To combat this there is a kitchen for parents on the ward, which has a cooker and fridge freezer etc.

Ward routine

Meal Times: Breakfast is available from 8am - 8:30am for both children and their parents. However, it is a flexible mealtime and parents are welcome to help themselves.  Lunch is from noon – 1pm, and dinner is at 5:30pm.

Rounds: Rounds aren’t at set times. However for oncology patients, Registrar rounds are usually in the morning and Consultant rounds are usually in the evening and can be as late as 8pm. It is also important to note that on weekend rounds may be at very different times.

Visiting: Visiting hours are open; however it is recommended that visitors begin leaving at 8pm to allow the patients adequate rest.

Accommodation for families

Parents are able to sleep on a pull-down bed next to the bed of their child in the cubicles and bays.  There is additional accommodation at Crawford House, run by the Sick Children’s Trust. This is accessed via ward staff on admission. This is for parents of children aged under 16 only. There are also parents’ flats available which can be arranged via Ward 23 staff (BMT unit).
