General hospital amenities

In the concourse area you will find a café serving snacks and meals throughout the day, and a variety of shops including a newsagent, general store, florist, clothes shop, travel agent, drycleaner, optician and hairdresser. There is also a branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland on Level 8 above the main entrance, which is home to a 24hr cashpoint.

Staff canteens, which can also be used by parents, are located on Levels 5 and 9. Payphones are located throughout the hospital and there is a post box located near the entrance.

The centre of Dundee is not far away and has all of the major high street shops and banks, a Post Office and places to eat.

Travel details to hospital

Train: Dundee train station is located in the centre city, one mile from the hospital. Buses go from the centre of town on a regular basis.

Bus: There are regular bus services to the hospital from Dundee city centre and the surrounding areas. The shuttle bus service is available on weekdays from 9am-5pm, between car park 9, the multi-storey car park and the main entrance.

Parking: There is a small car park beside the children’s ward which is Pay-and-Display for short-stay parking.  Hospital car parking facilities are used to their full extent daily by outpatients, visitors and staff. You are therefore requested not to leave your car in any of the car parks during your stay.

Ward details

General: Ward 29 – General Paediatric

No. of Beds: 6 side rooms dedicated to oncology patients, at times there may be more.

Age Range: 0–16, depending on diagnosis.

Additional Information: Surgery and radiotherapy will be carried out in Edinburgh.

Ward facilities

Play: There is a play area with a section set aside for oncology patients in order to avoid any infection. An outside garden area is also available. Facilities available include games, toys, activities, a small pool table and computer games. Teenagers are able to use the teenage room that is more focused towards young adults. Facilities here include sofas, computers, Xbox, music systems, Playstation and a large pool table. Play specialists are available on the ward.

Learning: A dedicated school teacher is on the ward to offer tuition every afternoon in the patient’s side room.

Other Facilities: The side rooms have a telephone/direct outside line. They also have a TV, DVD and Playstation. Radio Lollipop provides children with activities and music. There is a parents’ lounge and sitting area, with TV and cooking are, at the end of the ward.

Ward routine

Meal Times: Breakfast is flexible and generally served when the patient wakes up. Lunch is served from 12pm – 12:30pm and dinner from 4:45pm – 5pm. Patients are allowed a snack if necessary.

Rounds: These are carried out every morning around 9:30am.

Visiting times: This is flexible for parents.  Others are welcome to visit between 2pm – 8pm.

Accommodation for families

All Oncology patients are provided with a side room on the ward. Each has a fold-down bed (one parent at a time), plus toilet facilities. Ronald Macdonald accommodation may be available to families, dependant upon circumstances - please ask ward staff for further details. Please be aware that Ronald MacDonald accommodation is shared between three wards and is not always available.
