General hospital amenities

The basic amenities include: Friends of the Hospital coffee bar – Ground Floor, Tower Block; WRVS coffee bar – Ground Floor, Trelawney Wing; United News – Ground Floor, Trelawney; Barclays Bank – Ground Floor, Tower Block.

Mullions Restaurant is on the Ground Floor and is open 7:30am-1pm. Hot and cold snacks are available throughout the day, as well as main meals at set times. There is also a Koffee Korner and coffee bar.

There is a cashpoint by the main entrance of the Trelawney Wing.

The Link Centre has staff to help you with a wide range of general information about the hospital and you can access bus timetables here. This is also where you need to go if you think you are eligible to claim for certain types of travel costs.

The nearest supermarkets are Sainsbury’s and Aldi, which are approximately two miles on the main road towards Truro.  There are also cashpoints here. The centre of Truro is approximately three miles away and can be reached by a bus that departs from the front of the hospital.

Travel details to hospital

Train: Truro station is located just over two miles from the centre of Truro.

Bus: The bus leaves from outside the hospital. Contact First Devon and Cornwall on 0845 600 1420 or Truronian on 01872 273 453 for more information.

Parking on Site: Car parking is becoming increasingly difficult. You will therefore need to allow yourself plenty of time to park before your appointment.

Charges apply for parking, but you can apply for a weekly/monthly permit from the hut in the main visitors’ car park.

General: Paediatric Medical Ward – Sennen Ward. Extension 2062 or 2069.

Age Range: 0 - 16

Other Details: All the beds are located in cubicles.

Ward facilities

Play: Play specialists assist and play with all the children with cancer. There is an ample supply of toys and games which the children are able to play with in their rooms. There is a playroom located off the ward with a play specialist; this is open to all paediatric patients, not just oncology. Located away from the ward there is a teenage sitting area open to all teenage patients.

Learning: There is a hospital schoolroom, with teachers who will liaise with the child’s school and also in some cases provide home tuition. Internet access is available here. Teachers are able to provide resources to learn by the bed.  There is also a nursery facility.

Other Facilities: There is a ward kitchen for parents and families to make their own food, and a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Ward routine

Meal Times: These are at set times. Lunch is 12-12.30pm and dinner is 5-6pm.

Rounds: Ward rounds are on a flexible basis. There is a staff nurse who specialises in paediatric oncology based on the ward.

Visiting times: Open visiting is in place.

Accommodation for families

Accommodation is situated on the fourth floor of the Tower Block and provides a place for parents to sleep, shower or simply relax away from the ward environment. All bedrooms have phones so that you can be easily contacted from the ward if your child needs you. If you would rather stay on the ward next to your child’s bed, the ward staff will provide you with a fold-down bed, recliner chair and blankets.
