General hospital amenities

The Eaterie restaurant can be found on Level B, Centre Block. It is open to staff, patients and visitors from 7:30am – 8:30pm, and serves a wide range of hot and cold meals, and drinks, sandwiches and snacks. Vending machines are located throughout the hospital.

Various shops are located in the main entrance. These include W H Smith and a League of Friends (there is also a second League of Friends located in the Eye Unit). In this area you will also find a solicitors, clothing shop, florist, Burger King and an Upper Crust sandwich bar.

Other facilities include a post box, photo ID machine, 24hr Natwest cashpoint, freephone taxi services and wheelchair hire.  There is also a mobile hairdresser which can be arranged by the ward staff.   The hospital has an information room in its entrance, which provides travel information and leaflets about benefits, disability and health care. Please note that this is not an advice centre.

There is a Post Office is in Warren Avenue adjacent to the hospital site. Major supermarkets are located nearby and the nearest shopping centre is West Quay Shopping Centre which is easily accessible by public transport, car or taxi. Cinemas can be found at West Quay and Ocean Village.

Travel details to hospital

Train: The nearest train station to the hospital is Southampton Central located in the city centre. The quickest routes from this station are bus numbers 5A, 10, 10A and 17.  Bus 17A is the quickest route from Millbrook railway station.

Bus: The hospital is very well served by buses. It is best to contact Traveline on 0870 608 2608 to find out which service is best for you.

Parking on Site: Parking is very limited at the hospital site. If you are coming for an outpatient appointment, please consider being dropped off or if possible, using public transport. Parking charges are shown on the board near the pay machine, but if using the car park for more than a few days at a time, long-stay tickets are available from the Travelwise Office in the Old Nurses Home. Discounted parking is available through the ward for both inpatients and outpatients.

Oncology ward details

General: Paediatric Oncology Ward – Piam Brown Ward.

Direct Telephone: Outpatient – 02380 794 249. Inpatient – 02380 794 816.

No. of Beds: 10 bedded unit – 4 bed bay, 2 bed bay and 4 cubicles.

Age Range: 0 – 16 (depending on diagnosis).

Ward facilities

Play: There is a play specialist available for the children. A well-equipped playroom exists on the ward with toys, games and computers.

Learning: There is a separate schoolroom on the ward which has computers and other classroom amenities. Teaching staff are on hand and are able to provide bedside teaching in addition to teaching in the classroom.

After-hours and during school holidays the school room doubles as a teenage room, giving teenagers access to a pool table, football table, TV, computer and internet access.

Other Facilities: On the ward there is a small and a large parents’ lounge for relaxing and a kitchen to prepare meals and drinks. A second kitchen is available on the ward to prepare meals for patients. A bathroom and shower are also available for parents.

Ward routine

Meal Times: All meals are at set times. Breakfast is 7:30am – 8:30am, lunch 12pm and dinner 5:30pm – 6:30pm.

Rounds: There is a set routine each week. Doctors do rounds every morning, but the main medical round takes place twice a week and patients staying for the weekend will always be assessed on Friday afternoon.

Visiting Times: These are completely open, but at the discretion of the ward sister.

Accommodation for families

There are pull-out beds for one parent in the cubicles and the two bedded bay.

CLIC Haven, a Home-from-Home run by CLIC Sargent, has five bedrooms. The house offers free accommodation to families on the hospital site. The comfortable and well maintained accommodation is self-catering and offers a communal kitchen and sitting room/playroom as well as a garden. Bookings are made via the ward team.

Additional information

Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre provides information and support to all people affected by cancer.  The Centre is located on B Level by the East Wing Courtyard.
