General hospital amenities
On the hospital premises you will find WRVS cafes and shops, a cashpoint machine, a canteen, Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre and a patient library.
The hospital is located to the northwest of the city centre and local amenities are fairly limited. Craigleith Park shopping complex on Telford Road has all general facilities. Detailed information can be found from the City Centre Tourism Office on: 0131 473 3800.
The Social Security Benefits office is available on: 0131 229 9191. They will be able to advise you about benefit entitlement.
top of pageTravel details to hospital
Train: Edinburgh Waverley Station is about 20 minutes away from the hospital by car. The train station in the city centre is two miles away from the hospital, although regular buses travel from the city centre Western General. For more information, contact National Rail enquiries on 0845 748 4950.
Bus: Western General Hospital is located between Crewe Road and Telford Road in the Craigleith area. The hospital is well served by public transport, although services are subject to change. Currently Lothian Buses X47 and 19, and First Edinburgh 129 serve the hospital from the city centre. For up-to-date information about routes and times, please contact Travel Scotland on 0870 608 2608
Parking on Site: Unfortunately there is not much room for parking in the hospital grounds, especially at peak times (8:45am – 3pm Monday to Friday). It is advisable to use public transport or to be dropped off by car or taxi. Please do not bring a car if at all possible.

There is no specific young people’s unit. Young people are cared for on the ward which is most appropriate for their needs.
top of pageAccommodation for families
One person is able to sleep next to the bedside of the young person on a separate bed. There is also a CLIC Sargent Home from Home - CLIC Villa - located at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. This offers free accommodation to families. The comfortable and well-maintained accommodation is self-catering, and offers 8 bedrooms, a communal kitchen and sitting room/play room, as well as a garden. Referrals can be made via the CLIC Sargent Social Worker or hospital team.
