Weston Park is one of the UK’s specialist adult cancer hospitals. Weston Park specialises in the treatment of solid tumours. Leukemia treatment for over 16’s usually take place at the nearby Hallamshire Hospital.

General hospital amenities

There is a WRVS coffee bar in the main entrance and a small shop selling toiletries, sweets etc. 

The hospital has a chapel on the 1st floor and staff on the unit are also happy to arrange for a representative from all of the main religious groups to visit you while you are in hospital. 

The hospital has a hairdresser on the third floor (small charge applicable) and a massage service can visit the unit.

The hospital is near the main University of Sheffield campus. Weston Park (actual park!) is nearby and this has a museum and art gallery and café. There are numerous food outlets in the surrounding area. Broomhill is the nearest small shopping area, 5 minutes walk from the hospital, where there is a supermarket, sandwich shops, chemists, bookshop and newsagents. There are also cash machines and diverse food outlets that will deliver to the hospital. 

The city centre is a 25 minute walk away and there are frequent buses from outside the hospital to Broomhill and the centre. The city centre and Meadowhall Shopping Centre can also be reached from the hospital by tram and the nearest stop is 10 minutes walk. A map of Sheffield is provided in the Welcome Pack given to all young people staying at the Teenage Unit.

Travel details to hospital

Train: Sheffield station is in the city centre 2 miles away.  From here you can get a tram that goes to within 10 minutes walk of the hospital.  You can also get a taxi for about £8. From the station the number 6o bus stops outside the Hallamshire hospital and Weston Park is two minutes walk from here. 

Buses: The hospital is well served by public transport.  For more information visit www.sypte.co.uk

  • From Sheffield interchange bus number 60 runs every 10 minutes during the day and every 20 minutes in the evening.
  • From High Street in the City Centre (outside MacDonalds) Bus numbers 51 and 52 run every 6 minutes by day and 12 minutes in the evening.

Tram: This goes to Meadowhall and the city centre from the ‘University’ stop and is 10 minute walk down the hill from the hospital.  Services are every 10 minutes during the day and 20 minutes evenings and Sundays.

Parking on site: Weston Park Hospital has one small free car park for patients and visitors. Parking is extremely limited and there is usually a queue for spaces during the day.  Parking in the surrounding area is also very limited and it is advisable to use public transport wherever possible.

Teenage Cancer Unit details

General: The Teenage Unit is at the end of Ward Three on the third floor of the hospital.

Teenage Cancer Unit facilities

The unit has five single en suite rooms called ‘snugs’. Each has a tv, dvd, stereo and four of the five rooms have internet access (all five will have access later in 2007).  Each room has a free telephone that will accept direct incoming calls so friends and family can stay in touch. Mobile phone use is not allowed.

Patients and visitors can use a small kitchen to prepare and eat provided or self provided drinks, snacks and light meals. A microwave, kettle and fridge are available but no oven or hobs. 

There is a living room with wide screen tv, dvd player and a selection of dvd’s. Also games consoles, board games, CD player and CD’s, table football and books.

In 2007 the Teenage Unit will be extended with the addition of a conservatory. When completed this will provide a further area for relaxation for patients and visitors and will also have a Pool Table. 

There is a ‘Chill Out’ room for quiet time with massage chair. 

There is a small outdoor patio area with table and chairs.

A variety of social activities are offered both on the unit and outside the hospital.

NB Smoking is not allowed on the Teenage Unit or anywhere on Hospital premises or grounds.

Teenage Cancer Unit routine

Meal Times: Meals are served by trolley. A cooked breakfast is served at 8am.  Cereals and toast are available on the unit at any time. Lunch is at 12 noon and dinner at 6pm.  Patients are also allowed food ordered from the canteen at any time and can of course prepare their own food in the unit kitchen.

Rounds: The Consultants each have a weekly round on the unit. 

Visiting Times: Visiting times are usually between 10am and 8pm but can be flexible as long as staff are notified. Children are usually welcome to visit but please check with staff first.

Accommodation for families

Weston Park hospital has two overnight rooms for relatives for the use of the whole hospital. Friends, partners and relatives can, however stay overnight in the patient’s rooms (sleeping on a fold up bed) – just check with staff first. If you are under the age of 18 you will need parental permission for friends or partner to stay over.
