General hospital amenities

Hospital amenities include a canteen, cafeteria, hospital shop and a hairdresser in the Cancer Centre.

The hospital is located just out side of Rhyl centre which has all high street major amenities.

Travel details to hospital

Train: Rhyl station is served via Chester by Arriva Trains Wales and Virgin's West Coast Trains services on the London Euston/Crewe-Holyhead and Manchester-Holyhead routes. Crewe is approximately a one hour journey, Birmingham New Street two hours, London Euston three hours and Cardiff just under four hours. Bus: Arriva Cymru Bus routes serve the hospital and depart from Bay 2 outside the railway station with a journey time of 17 minutes. Bus connections are operated by Arriva Cymru.  The number 51 runs regular services that enter the Glan Clwyd Hospital grounds. This service runs mainly at 20 minute intervals, between Rhyl, St. Asaph and Denbigh, and operates on Sundays and public holidays.

Parking on site: A Pay-on-Exit managed parking scheme operates at Raigmore. Visitors should use the barrier-controlled parking zones at either the front of the site or adjacent to the North Wales Cancer Treatment, and Family Services area towards the rear.

Ward facilities

Play: There is a large very well equipped play room on the ward. Facilities include laptop computers, TVs, videos, DVDs, Gameboys, Xbox, Playstation, a Foozeball table and arts & craft materials. There are five nursery nurses on rotating shifts, available to assist the children.

There is a chest in each cubicle that contains a laptop computer, for the patients to use. Each bed is equipped with a TV, DVD player and Playstation.

Learning: Due to the length of the average stay there is no formal teaching on the ward. However the play therapists can provide work to complete and the children are able to bring in their own work from school. If a patient is in for a long term a private tutor will be brought in.

Other Facilities: Oncology patients have their own designated area/treatment room to administer chemotherapy as and when required by the PC centre.

Ward routine

Meals: These are at set times. Breakfast is 7:30am - 8am, lunch at 12pm, dinner at 5pm and supper ay 7pm. However meals can also be provided at most other times if the patient should require it.

Rounds: These take place each morning, but are flexible and can vary from day to day. Patients are reviewed regularly during the day and if they require further attention from a doctor in the afternoon or evening, the nurses will arrange a visit.

Visiting Times:  Visiting hours are completely open.

Additional Information: All oncology children and young people have open access to the ward 24 hours a day.  However, it is asked that you contact the ward prior to bringing your child in.

Accommodation for families

One parent is able to stay next to the bed of the child in the cubicle. ‘Ty Croeso’  offers further accommodation to parents of special care or long-term patients and is attached to the playroom on the ward. It is fully equipped with six rooms, a kitchen, washing and drying facilities and conservatory to relax in. The manager at Ty Croeso can assist you with arranging accommodation here.
