My journey.
I was diagnosed with bi-lateral retinablastoma when I was a few weeks old. I had my left eye removed in 1980 and then had treatment on my right eye. Though my sight has gotten worse over the eyes and I am now registered blind at 29 years of age.
For years I was always so aware of feeling and maybe looking different, but now I look and think, well if I didn't look just this little bit different then I wouldn't be here and thank the doctors.
For all my problems over the years, I still like to look forward to life with lots of fun in mind.
Perhaps in a whole it has gotten easier over the years as retinablastoma has affected my mum, my uncle and my aunt in the first generation and then myself and my cousin in the second generation.
Cancer I feel is no longer a word to fear as it holds no prisoners and has no discrimantion about anything in life. The best way to deal with it is with a big smile and a positive attitude. Because I will get to my next challange in life.
I spent a lot of happy time at the CLIC house in Prestiwck. In fact I presented Princess Diana with flowers at the offical opening of the unit.
Looking a head, I plan to go back to uni to give myself that new challange all over again.
