CLIC Sargent Youth Workers and Social Workers

CLIC Sargent Youth Workers and Social Workers can help you understand what happens during treatment, and discuss how you feel. Most people find it really helps to talk. And they can arrange things for you to do on the ward and put you in touch with other young people in the same boat.

Our youth workers and social workers can be a link between you, the hospital tutor and school or college. If you work, they can advise on benefits, employment rights and can talk to your employer. In some areas, we’ve introduced mentors – people from the community or work – who can help you to get your life back when treatment is over.

Outside the hospital, our youth workers plan activities, offering young people the opportunity to socialise and regain their confidence and physical strength.

Help with benefits

If you have cancer, you may be able to get help through benefits such as:

  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Statutory Sick Pay
  • Incapacity Benefit
  • Income Support
  • Council Tax/Housing Benefits

If you’re not sure about what you could get, talk to your CLIC Sargent Youth Worker or Social Worker who will be about to help you find out. Or you can call CLIC Sargent’s FREE helpline on 0800 197 0068.

There’s always someone there Monday – Friday 9am to 5pm. And every Friday there is someone who specialises in benefits advice. You’ll also find factsheets about benefits on our benefits page.

Other services for you, from CLIC Sargent

Homes from Home
Close to some of the main oncology treatment centres, CLIC Sargent offers free self-catering accommodation for your family. This means they can stay close by, saving the time and cost of travelling to be with you.

Currently we have homes in Bristol (3), Southampton, Oxford, Glasgow, Edinburgh. Another is due to open near University College London in 2008, and we hope to open even more in the years ahead. To go about getting a room, please ask on your ward.

Holidays
When you are feeling better, you may like to ask about CLIC Sargent holidays (especially as they are completely free!) We’ve got a large guest house in Scotland on the Ayrshire coast where we run weekend and weeklong holidays for groups of young people. Or you could visit with your own family.

We also have four luxury caravans around the coast – in Devon, Yorkshire, Lancashire and West Sussex. To find out more talk to your youth or social worker

Help at home
If you’ve a partner and children, you may like to hear about our Family Support Service. We currently run this service in the south west, Northern Ireland and Glasgow. We call at your home to help with childcare, prepare meals and do housework – whatever helps you most. Ask your CLIC Sargent Youth Worker

" I was stuck in hospital and started to get really worried about falling behind with my college course. Helen rang my tutor and they worked out a way of me doing some coursework in hospital when I was up to it. " Josie, talking about her CLIC Sargent Social Worker, Helen.

" It can be weird going out and meeting people again after spending months on your own in hospital. But Tracy gets us all together and organises loads of stuff. It feels quite normal now. " Allister, talking about Tracy, his CLIC Sargent Youth Development Worker.
