Dr Carole Easton, Chief Executive of the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent, welcomes the breakthrough research into childhood leukaemia. Dr Easton says: “This new research is hugely exciting. CLIC Sargent has been working hard for many years with other organisations, to not only find a cure for childhood cancer, but also to help care for and support the 10 children and young people in the UK who are diagnosed with the illness every day. More work is needed in the future to ensure these findings are used to make treatment for childhood leukaemia less horrific and in the end, find a cure.”
James Henney from Gloucestershire is a 23 year old survivor of childhood leukaemia. James says: “I am thrilled to read the findings of this research into acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). I was diagnosed with the disease when I was 15 and I underwent three years of gruelling and toxic chemotherapy. It really knocked me out, and as a result I missed at lot of vital schooling and it has taken me a number of years to get my life back. I just hope this new research will save other children and young people with leukaemia having to go through the same traumatic experience as me.”
For interviews with children, young people and parents affected by childhood leukaemia and other cancers please contact the CLIC Sargent press office on 020 8752 2833 / 0117 314 8620 or email zoe.grumbridge@clicsargent.org.uk.
