Liam Fairhurst

Superstar fundraiser, thirteen year old Liam Fairhurst, who has raised more than £150,000, has won Five News Britain’s Kindest Kid  competition it was announced yesterday.

The teenager from Cambridgeshire made it through to the final round of a national competition, Britain’s Kindest Kid, organised by Five News and the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) to find Britain’s kindest kid.

Liam kick started his fundraising in 2006 completing a sponsored one mile swim, which saw him raise £12,000. In December 2006, he appeared on ITV’s Fortune Million Pound Giveaway and persuaded the panel of millionaires to part with £50,714.10 to buy and fund a CLIC Sargent holiday home in Filey in Yorkshire.

Liam has also raised money by auctioning a special bottle of House of Commons whisky donated by the Prime Minister that Liam surpassed his £150,000 fundraising target in May 2008.  Liam has managed to raise a huge amount of money for CLIC Sargent that will help other children and families like Liam’s.

Liam was diagnosed with cancer in his left leg in 2005 and further tests showed that it had also spread to his left lung.  It was after undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy and an operation to remove the tumour that Liam decided to raise money for CLIC Sargent.

The Britain’s Kindest Kid competition was judged by Natasha Kaplinsky, presenter of Five News and John Low, Chief Executive of the Charities Aid Foundation, Josie MacRae, Deputy Editor of Five News, Gill Nunn, Director of Innovation for the Charities Aid Foundation, and Charlotte Foster, Young Vice-Chair of UK Youth.

John Low, Chief Executive of the Charities Aid Foundation, said: “It was immensely rewarding to hear so many stories of young people who do such incredible things for others. These five finalists really are exceptional young people.”
