This Thursday (6th March) local hairdresser, Anne Armstrong of Central Hair Studios in Newcastle, will join staff from CLIC Sargent and St Baldrick’s Foundation to launch a unique fundraising event to raise money for children with cancer in Northern Ireland. The launch will take place at 4pm in Maginns Bar, 9-11 Main Street, Castlewellan.
Anne is attempting to break the UK record to shave a record number of heads in the space of an hour this April and what's to drum up local support through her launch this Thursday. The record to date is 29 heads, Anne thinks she can whizz through at least 33 heads with her clippers in that time. She’s calling on local people to support her challenge and give up their hair for a good cause - “shaving your head is a great way to show your support for children and young people being treated for cancer and undergoing chemotherapy,” explained Anne. “At the same time you are raising valuable funds for CLIC Sargent to enable them to support the two children diagnosed with cancer each week in Northern Ireland.
Last year CLIC Sargent and the St Baldrick Foundation in Northern Ireland held a sponsored head shave in Castlewellan and raised a fantastic £14,600. This year they want to top this amount and need volunteers to give up their hair and help top the fundraising target. The organisers are also very keen for local people to come along and show their support. The date set for the record breaking challenge is 8pm on Friday 25th April at Maginns Bar in Castlewellan. If you’d like to take part in the challenge please contact Naomi at CLIC Sargent on: 028 9072 5780 or email: naomi.conway@clicsargent.org.uk, or Martin at Maginns Bar on: 028 43778235.
Naomi Conway, CLIC Sargent Community Fundraising Manager added: “Each and every day children with cancer are fighting their own challenge, overcoming the stresses and strains of their treatment. Giving up your hair, which you’ve taken so long to grow, is a real challenge and gesture of solidarity to children with cancer. We are extremely grateful to all those who decide to take part.”
