A 12-year-old boy from Newquay has gone to great lengths to help raise more than £600 for families whose lives have been turned upside down by childhood cancer.

Josh was sponsored to have his long, blonde curly hair cut as part of the Be Bold Go Bald fundraising campaign for CLIC Sargent.

The student at Treviglas Community College recently joined the Newquay Hornets Rugby Club and currently plays for the Under 13s. Long hair is a hazard in a scrum and at the end of last month, Josh swapped the long, flowing locks he had sported for the last seven years for a new, shorter look. Tracey Perry, hair stylist and owner of Mamouchi in Newbridge Street, Truro carried out the haircut at Newquay Sports Centre watched by Josh’s team mates. Josh’s hair has since been sent to wig maker Banbury Postiche so a wig can be created for a person with cancer.

CLIC Sargent’s Local Event Fundraising Manager, Emma Perry, said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to Josh for choosing to support CLIC Sargent’s Be Bold Go Bald campaign, to Tracy from Mamouchi for giving up her time to do the haircut and to everyone who supported the challenge bringing the total so far to more than £600. The money raised could, for example, be used to pay for three community support grants. These help families meet the cost of any extra support they may need such as childcare or home help. This allows parents to spend more time at the hospital with their child.”
