Places are filling up fast for the 1066 SwimRun 2010 in Hastings and organisers have put a final call out for locals wanting to take on the endurance event.
This year’s event is taking place from 10.30am on Sunday 11 July and will see fitness enthusiasts take to the water at the Harbour Arm for a 1.66 mile swim followed by an optional run or walk 1.33 miles up and down the East Hill. Registration for the event is £15 and participants are also encouraged to raise sponsorship for children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent – a cause close to organiser Peter Wheeler’s heart.
Peter’s son Thomas died from a rare form of liver cancer in June 2007, aged 17. He has organised the 1066 SwimRun since 2006 and has raised around £22,500 to help families affected by childhood cancer – through CLIC Sargent and The Royal Marsden Hospital. The event has attracted around 100 participants over the years, including comediennes Doon Mackichan, Jo Brand and Jo Brookes.
“The event has become really popular among sea swimmers and we hoping to raise as much as we can for CLIC Sargent this year,” says Peter. “If anyone is interested in taking part then they need to get in touch with me in advance of the race to be registered. We have set up a special online sponsorship page so if you would like to support a swim runner then please do donate – every penny really does make a difference,” he adds.
For more information about the 1066 Swim Run 2010, or to register, contact Peter Wheeler on 07854 056142 or email swim1066@yahoo.co.uk. For fundraising help and support contact Dan Powell, CLIC Sargent’s local Community Fundraising Manager on 01273 897381 or email dan.powell@clicsargent.org.uk.
