Pupils from Mayflower Primary School in Dovercourt, Essex, have come up with a musical way to remember one of their school mates who sadly died of cancer four years ago.  The school has adopted a song called Rocket Girl and they have been given permission to record their own version of the track which they hope to sell to raise funds for CLIC Sargent.

An annual concert has been held at the school in memory of 10-year-old Declan since his death in 2004.  This year music teacher Mr Martin heard Rocket Girl on the radio and felt the lyrics would be appropriate for the concert so pupils got to work practising the song, and also a dance to accompany it.  Students performed the song at the special concert to an audience of over 400 people and it was so well received the school has decided to take the next step to release the track for listeners to download.

Music teacher Mr Martin said, “The song is tremendously upbeat and we felt it was just so right for Declan, for his family and for his friends. It tells of trying to get in touch with someone really special that you just can’t reach – everyone just loves it”.

Talented Mayflower students have created a unique dance to accompany the song and are in the process of filming a video so others can learn the moves.

Rocket Girl was originally recorded by the Cornish band, The Wiredaisies and the Mayflower School’s version is sung by Declan’s former classmate 14-year-old Laura.  Musical contributions were also made by many other students.

Karen Roberts, local Community Fundraising Manager for CLIC Sargent, said, “Mayflower pupils have really put their heart and soul into performing Rocket Girl in Declan’s memory.  The lyrics have a special meaning for everyone who knew Declan and the students have done really well with their version of the tune.  It’s a catchy song so I’m sure it’ll raise lots of money to help other children and young people with cancer, and their families.”

The song is available to download from http://www.moonbootson.com with a £1.00 donation to CLIC Sargent.
