18 children and young people aged 7 to 24 from across the UK enjoyed some serious fun at the Children and Young People’s Advisory Group’s (CYPAG) first birthday event held at Malcolm Sargent House, Prestwick.

The Group - formed in 2009 - is made up of children and young people from across the UK. They meet regularly, and through discussion they inform CLIC Sargent on how best to support all children and young people with cancer.

The young people and children - accompanied by their families - arrived in sunny Scotland on the evening of Friday 19th June where they quickly got to work filling the lounge with their hand made flags and bunting, hats and badges and watched World Cup football in style.

On Saturday, the members held a meeting to put the final touches to the Children and Young People’s Charter of Participation* and finalise the content for a new children’s newsletter to be trialled in the coming months. Members also discussed how they believe CLIC Sargent’s Trustees can get more directly involved with children and young people, which has informed a proposal that has been welcomed by the Board of Trustees.

As everyone knows, you can’t have a birthday without a party so to celebrate the Group’s first birthday the group dined on a lunch of party food, played games and even had a yummy birthday cake! Later that evening they decided to take over the town with all 39 children, young people and their families showing off their sporting talents at the Bowlplex.

On Sunday - after taking part in a treasure hunt -  it was time for the Group to pack up and say their goodbyes before heading home.

Some serious fun was had by all.

Background

* The Charter of Participation is a document written by the CYPAG to tell CLIC Sargent and others how they can help children and young people to talk about things that they believe are important, and enable them to make their own decisions on matters that affect their life.
