CLIC Sargent wants to say a huge thank you to Virgin Trains and, in particular, five drivers based at Manchester Piccadilly station for raising an incredible £40,080 in aid of the charity with the ‘Train of Hope’.

The steam-hauled Train of Hope took passengers on a return journey from Crewe to Carlisle in October, travelling through the beautiful Lake District and Yorkshire Dales countryside and returning on the historic Settle – Carlisle line. Hayley Greenwood, 21, and her family from Leyland were invited and had the chance to meet train enthusiast and record producer Pete Waterman on the day. Hayley was supported by CLIC Sargent when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

John Young, Virgin Trains driver who organised the event, said: “It took 14 months to organise the Train of Hope and I would like to thank my wife and drivers Alan Moss, Gary Nuthall, Steve Griffin and Jamie Chadwick who helped me along the way. It was hard work and I could not have reached our £40,000 target without the entire team. I was really pleased with how well the event went and we’ve even had requests to run another one next year!”

Lucy Knight, Regional Corporate Fundraising Manager at CLIC Sargent, said: “CLIC Sargent wants to say a huge thank you again to Virgin Trains for holding the Train of Hope and raising funds which will make a big difference to families affected by childhood cancer.

“The money raised could pay for 100 families to stay at a CLIC Sargent Home from Home for a fortnight. The charity runs Homes from Home around the UK that provide family members with free accommodation at walking distance from the hospital where their child is being treated. Children or young adults with cancer travel an average of 60 miles, up to five times a week for hospital treatment, so those Homes from Home save them a lot of time and money.”

So far the partnership has generated over £380,000 and Virgin Trains is committed to supporting CLIC Sargent until March 2012.
