Children from 20 schools across West Cornwall are joining in with World Cup football fever, and helping to raise money for children with cancer, by taking part in a local football tournament and skills days for CLIC Sargent.
Training sessions with each squad will take place at schools throughout the week of Monday 14 June culminating with a tournament on Friday 18 June, the same day England play Algeria in South Africa. More than 200 young people from Cornish schools will be taking part in the event, organised by Jake Ash, Penryn Colleges’ Football Development Officer, to help families whose lives have been turned upside down by childhood cancer.
They join young people from schools and football clubs across the country taking part in Kick for Children with Cancer – a fun football fundraising campaign to raise money for CLIC Sargent. Money raised through the campaign will go towards providing clinical, practical and emotional support for children and young people with cancer, and their families.
The schools can choose to keep 25% of the money raised to help fund resources such as sports equipment or donate the full amount to CLIC Sargent.
“We’re delighted that we have so many schools, from Truro to St Ives, supporting Kick for Children with Cancer,” says Emma Perry, CLIC Sargent’s local Event Fundraising Manager. “Getting out on to the pitch this summer is a great way for young people to get fit and active – and raise money for a good cause at the same time,” she adds.
This is Kick for Children with Cancer’s sixth consecutive year. The campaign has raised over £700,000 to date with more than 450,000 children and young people taking part in events throughout the UK.
“After the success of last year’s event where we raised over £500, we are really excited about helping CLIC Sargent again,” says Jake Ash. “We have invited every primary school in our Penryn Sports Partnership family, and each team entered will be assigned a nation from the World Cup for the day before battling out in a 6-a-side competition. I am sure it will be a fantastic day and we are hoping that we can surpass last year’s total for what is such a great cause.”
