CLIC Sargent would like to thank all the runners who participated in yesterday’s marathon to raise money for the Charity. A World Record breaking ‘chain gang’ of 25 Metropolitan Police officers, Radio One sports presenter Mark Chapman (aka ‘Chappers’), and Simon Kendrick, whose toddler son has cancer, were among the 300 runners who successfully completed the Flora London Marathon raising an estimated £600,000 for CLIC Sargent.

Ginny Elliot, horse trials Olympic medallist, and Paul Clement, who is running a total of five Marathons this year to celebrate his fiftieth birthday, were also among the determined individuals who ran the gruelling 26.2 miles in mixed weather conditions for the Charity.

“It was a terrific event and we were amazed at the level of support we received from participants,” says Tamara Downes, CLIC Sargent Running Events Manager. “We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who ran for CLIC Sargent, many of whom have spent months fundraising and training.”

A team of 25 Metropolitan Police officers broke the Guinness World Record for the “Most Linked Runners to Complete a Marathon” raising a total of £50,000 for CLIC Sargent. The Met Police chose to support the Charity because of the help and support CLIC Sargent has given to Inspector Geoff Wooloff’s 14-year-old son, Matthew Wooloff, who has been receiving treatment for leukaemia over the last year.

Ginny Elliot ran the Marathon as part of ‘Team Billy’, a group of 20 runners of whom most have links to the world of horse racing. The team expects to have raised an incredible £150,000 towards the £2 million needed to build a new CLIC Sargent ‘Home from Home’. Ginny says the race was tough but well worth the challenge. “Crossing the finishing line is a fantastic feeling; it’s a wonderful event to be a part of.”

Simon Kendrick, Director of Learning and Development at the fashion house Polo Ralph Lauren, took on the challenge to raise £15,000 as a ‘thank you’ for the help his family has received from CLIC Sargent since his 19-month-old son Ben was diagnosed with cancer last December. “The support I’ve received has been fantastic,” says Simon. “It’s a hard race to run but that’s the whole point of a marathon!”

Mark Chapman, the Radio one DJ ‘Chappers’, fulfilled his ambition to complete the race in less than five hours with a finish time of 4 hours 58 minutes.

The fundraising efforts of the CLIC Sargent runners will allow the Charity to deliver even more services to the 10 children and young people diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia every day in the UK.
