Home > Get involved > billys appeal > Background >“In April 2005 our life suddenly fell apart, Billy was diagnosed with cancer and from now on Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham was to become our home.
"With home a 100-mile round trip away, life for the whole family including Billy’s two sisters and brother became increasingly hard to manage.
"Billy was in a ward of 16 beds and the single z-bed next to his meant only one of us could stay. With only one shower, kettle and microwave shared between all the families on the ward, we all yearned from some privacy yet at the same time couldn’t bear not to be near our children who needed us.
"Luckily we were able to rent a small flat close to the hospital and this gave us some respite and meant we could be together as a whole family. It’s amazing what a difference a short time away from the hospital can do. Many families aren’t able to do this and have to pay for expensive hotel accommodation, make exhausting round trips daily or stay in unsuitable hospital lodging.
"Billy is now in remission and our life is returning to normality.
As a family we are determined to help CLIC Sargent provide a Home from Home in Nottingham so that other families like ours can stay together for free - in privacy and security just a few minutes walk from the hospital."
~ Laura, Billy’s Mum
