Ashdon was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma when he was eight years old.
Hayley, Ashdon’s mother, says: “When I heard that Ashdon had cancer, it just didn’t sink in. But it didn’t take long for it to take over our lives. Just two days later, we were on a cancer ward where we stayed for the next 6 months. Without Esther, our CLIC Sargent Social Worker, I wouldn’t have found the strength to cope. I can’t imagine how we’d have managed without her. I was devastated but she sat with me calmly explaining what Ashdon had and what was going to happen.”
top of pageFive years on Ashdon is back at school, but it’s been a tough journey. Like so many families, Ashdon’s cancer journey was made that little bit easier through the support of a CLIC Sargent social worker. Someone who listens, understands and holds your hand through difficult times.
Ashdon says: “Esther is really kind and makes you feel better. She made lots of wishes come true for me, like being a mascot for Nottingham Forest and meeting all of the Arsenal team at their training ground!”
Places to stay, financial grants, holidays and care professionals are just some of the other ways CLIC Sargent helps families in similar situations. Because when you have to hold your child’s hand through illness, you also want someone to hold yours.
