Paul Hopfensperger, Suffolk County Councillor and long-time supporter of CLIC Sargent, recently succeeded in his challenge to swim the English Channel in 13 hours and 50 minutes; a fantastic achievement!
All the money Paul raised through this challenge will be divided between CLIC Sargent and the local St Nicholas Hospice. To swim the channel has been a lifelong ambition of Paul’s and training has taken over his life, and that of his family, for nearly 12 months.
During his swim the pilot of the support vessel signalled to Paul that he only had 4 miles left. Paul was delighted, thinking it was almost over. However, it was another few hours before he finished as every further food stop added another ½ hour!
The amount that CLIC Sargent receive is yet to be confirmed but is estimated to be more than £2,000. On top of the money CLIC Sargent will receive, Paul also helped to raise the profile of the charity by inviting a presenter from BBC Radio Suffolk onto the support vessel to report his progress and give hourly details about the charities. This gave constant coverage of the charity over 24 hours across the county – money couldn’t buy that sort of advertising. Thanks Paul and WELL DONE!!!
