Home > In your region > Northern Ireland >We know that families need specialist support and advice from the very moment of diagnosis. Our Social Workers offers emotional, social and practical help in hospital and at home.
Jim, 14 was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma towards the end of 2009, and his family are being supported by Fiona, a CLIC Sargent Social Worker.
Jim’s Mum Theresa explains:
“We’ve had some great help from Fiona. Neither myself or my husband are employed at the moment and she’s been brilliant helping us to fill in forms, claim for expenses and advising us which charities we should approach for financial help.”
“Jim has needed to go to the hospital twice a week. Although we don’t live that far away we haven’t been able to take him on the bus because of the risk of infection. We have to use private taxis and the cost soon mounts up."
Cancer can impact all areas of your daily life, and for Jim, he’s had to miss school, as well as the other things he loves.
Theresa continues:
“Jim is supposed to be doing his Key Stage 3 at but has missed the last couple of terms. Thankfully Fiona has been able to sort out some home tutoring for Jim to help him keep up with his school work.
“Jim is really into history, museums and finding out how things work. He loves going to the W5 centre at the Odyssey (an interactive science centre) – but he hasn’t been well enough to do this kind of thing for a while. At the moment he spends a lot of time playing his computer games, and he’s got millions of those!”
With your help we can support more families like Jim’s to cope with the emotional and financial burden of having a young person with cancer. For more information about our CLIC Sargent Social Workers, read about Jason – the day in the life of a social worker.
