The Swain family from Ballykelly recently presented CLIC Sargent with a cheque for £1,855 following a fun packed weekend of fundraising.
Mary Swain’s son Michael was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in November 2010.
Speaking about his diagnosis and the subsequent support offered by CLIC Sargent, Mary said; “Whilst this was a total shock and a lot to get our heads around we decided the thing to do was get straight into treatment and go back to the plans we had made, which for Michael was to get his A Levels and go on to university.
“Apart from doctors there was one face that was to become a great help and friend to me. Her name is Laurena Kane and she is a social worker for CLIC Sargent. Laurena made me aware of the charity and the ways it could help our family. The information offered to myself was second to none and whilst we had so much going on with regards to treatment, CLIC Sargent helped us with grants for travel and tuition for Michael.
“As CLIC Sargent was so helpful, my husband and I decided that if we could help them raise funds then we would. If we could also help others in our predicament then all the better.”
In June 2011 Mary and her husband, Willie, organised a fundraising weekend. This included a Night at the Races at Limavady Rugby Club followed by a day of face painting, bouncy castles and activities for children.
The weekend also included a rugby match between City of Derry Legends and Limavady. Meanwhile family friend, Amy Hung, added to the fundraising total by holding a 'Pot Night' at her home, where her father cooked delicious Chinese food.
The Swain family would like to thank everyone for their help, donations and time during the weekend. In particular they would like to thank Amy Hung and her parents for all the effort they put into the event. All of the money raised will go in to the Michael Swain Especially for You Fund.
