Cancer survivor Carmela Della Monica from Doncaster will celebrate her 27th birthday and 20 year anniversary off treatment in October. To mark the occasion Carmela is abseiling 70 feet to help raise £10,000 for children with cancer.
The abseil will take place on Saturday 16th October at the world famous Doncaster Racecourse Leger Stand and will raise funds for CLIC Sargent, Tesco's Charity of the Year 2010.
The money will contribute to the charity's goal of raising £5million to fund CLIC Sargent specialist children's cancer nurses, so that children can spend more time at home and less time in hospital.
This is a cause close to Carmela's heart as she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia at three years old and treated at Sheffield Children's Hospital. Her mother, Denyse Della Monica said: "CLIC Sargent is an amazing charity. Our social worker was wonderful and kept us going, and having a nurse who could come to the house reduced hospital trips. At the moment there isn't a nurse in South Yorkshire. If we could help fund a nurse and help other families then that would be marvellous."
Carmela added: "I have been off treatment for 20 years, I have two wonderful children and everything to celebrate. I wanted to do something really massive for CLIC Sargent to say thank you."
Nicola Carr, Events Sales Co-ordinator at Doncaster Racecourse, will join Carmela on the day. If you want to get involved in this exciting challenge, registration is £10 with £100 minimum sponsorship. Raise over £150 and you'll receive a free T-shirt. Plus there's a prize for the top fundraiser!
