Captained by West Kirby airline pilot David Cullen, 40 fearless volunteers took part in the Mersey Tunnel Ventilation Station abseil for children with cancer.
The courageous Cullen family led the way - 164ft down the side of the Ventilation Station in Birkenhead. The event raised a fantastic £7,500 for CLIC Sargent, Tesco Charity of the Year 2010.
The funds will contribute towards the partnership's goal of raising £5 million for specialist children's cancer nurses to allow children to spend more time at home and less at hospital.
The Cullen family have strong ties with the charity: in October 2008 David and Lisa's eldest son Matthew was diagnosed with T-cell leukaemia. He is now mid-way through his treatment at Alder Hay. Matthew was the first one to take up the abseil challenge and David said: "Matthew is really determined and is always up for a challenge. He won't allow cancer to stop him from doing extraordinary things."
David added that after Matthew's diagnosis they spent a lot of time at Alder Hay and the CLIC Sargent staff were wonderful. Visiting the hospital at least twice a month had a big impact on all the whole family: with no CLIC Sargent nurse locally being able to have a nurse visit the home would be a fantastic help to all families.
The Cullens' really enjoyed the day and were delighted by how much was raised, they want to continue to support the charity as much as possible.
The Birkenhead abseil is just one of many exciting events staged by CLIC Sargent, see here for more details.
