CLIC Sargent Nurse Francis, from Brighton, was named the Best Community Practitioner at the 3rd WellChild and Best Magazine Children's Health Awards on 22 Ocotber 2007.

At the star-studded event at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, Francis was commended for the outstanding help, support and advice he provides to families of children with cancer, particularly those receiving end of life care.

Playing an important role in CLIC Sargent, Nurse Francis works at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton as a clinical nurse specialist in paediatric oncology and related palliative care. He was nominated for the award by staff at Demelza Hospice Care for Children who describe the CLIC Sargent nurse as going beyond the call of duty to provide round the clock support to families across Sussex.

Dr Carole Easton, Chief Executive of CLIC Sargent, says: “Francis provides an invaluable service to families dealing with the unimaginable. End of life care for children with cancer is a tragically the reality for three of the 10 children diagnosed with the illness every day.

"The dedication of care professionals like Francis – who provide practical, emotional and clinical support 24 hours a day – enable families to enjoy at home what little time they have left with their child. I am delighted that Francis’ commitment and hard work has been recognised through this award.”

This is not the first time the CLIC Sargent Nurse has been applauded for his dedication to children with cancer and their families. In February 2007, Francis was awarded the Excellence in Care award by the Sussex Cancer Network Partnership.

CLIC Sargent Nurse Francis say: “I am part of a team of CLIC Sargent care professionals who work with enormous dedication to support children with cancer and their families. From the day a family is told their child has cancer their lives will never be the same again.

"My role is to help these children and their families cope and keep life as normal as possible. This includes work to keep them at home and in school for as long as possible so they can maintain a degree of normality during such a traumatic time.”
