Pupils from 17 Cornish schools joined in with World Cup football fever by taking part in sponsored football events for CLIC Sargent this month.
Local Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Peter Bunyan, from Devon and Cornwall Police, held a week-long schools football event running from 17th May. It started with special penalty shoot-outs in all the local schools and culminated on 21st May with a football tournament for all the schools taking part. More than 3,000 young people from schools in Camborne, Pool and Redruth tried to beat the goalie, a member of their local policing team, in the sponsored penalty shoot-out.
They joined young people from schools and football clubs across the country taking part in Kick for Children with Cancer – a fun football fundraising campaign to raise money for CLIC Sargent. Money raised through the campaign will go towards providing clinical, practical and emotional support for children and young people with cancer, and their families.
“We’re delighted that so many local schools are supporting Kick for Children with Cancer,” says PCSO Peter Bunyan. “Getting out on to the pitch this summer is a great way for young people to get fit and active – and raise money for a good cause at the same time. It also gives us the chance to engage with young people in the community,” he adds. We would also like to thank Cornwall College for the allowing us the use of the Cornwall all weather pitches for the football tournament.
This is Kick for Children with Cancer’s sixth consecutive year. The campaign has raised over £700,000 to date with more than 450,000 children and young people taking part in events throughout the UK.
