For the fourth and last time RAF Lyneham hosted a visit by 11 children and young people and their families who are being supported by CLIC Sargent.
A full day of activities had been arranged. Everyone was able to climb over the two Hercules types ‘K’ and ‘J’ and, a Chinook from RAF Odiham. After an excellent lunch in the Officers Mess everyone flew the Hercules simulator – flying a circuit from Gibraltar avoiding Spanish airspace. The children pumped gallons of water with the fire crews, were made up to simulate gruesome injuries by front-line medics and RAF Regiment let them handle pistols and SA80 rifles. Masses of souvenirs went home with each family.
A final happy ending – RAF Lyneham closes in 2011 but RAF Brize Norton has agreed to host a special day for CLIC Sargent next year.
